PR Is A Heartthrob

Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is here to stay. Like every holiday, it’s been caramelized in commercialism: buy a bear for bae, order roses for bae, take bae to a movie, don’t annoy bae by calling him or her ‘bae,’ etc. And while I’m sure bae appreciates all you’re doing for her/him, it’s important to express your love for all the baes in life.

This Valentine’s Day, I’m expressing my top three reasons for falling in love with public relations (sorry, sweetie!).

Number one: it’s exciting! It’s the profession of people. Meet and greets, networking, collaboration, synergy … have I listed something you don’t love? Public relations is anything and everything but desk work. Sure, you may have to fill out your planner once a day, write a few press releases or piece a campaign together, but it’s not the typical 9 to 5 day spent hiding behind a cubicle. Honestly, PR people don’t get dressed up for nothing – you’ll likely be face-to-face in a meeting, with a team or at an event every day.

Number two: it’s an endless education. As a PR professional, you’ll constantly be exposed to new cultures and communication strategies. The job can take you to places that were previously non-existent in your mind. You may attend an event that centers on an unfamiliar custom and requires a little cultural education. And, more than likely, you’ll be introduced to numerous business and communication styles. Public relations forces you out into the world and ensures you experience it.

And finally – number three: the coffee stigma. Let’s be real: every profession has a stereotype. Historians drool over globes, doctors are obsessed with their white coats, and teachers love apples. Well, I’m proud to be an active participant in maintaining the coffee stigma attached to public relations. I sustained myself on coffee long before public relations came into my life, and I’m not ashamed to be a part of a culture that encourages my guilty pleasure.

While I only listed three, there are infinite reasons to love public relations. Maybe you share my reasons, or maybe you have your own PR fling. Maybe the thought of Valentine’s Day makes you want to gag, or maybe you can’t wait to see 50 Shades with bae. Regardless of what each means to you, remember to make it your own.
